MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS
Mark Philippoussis,
nicknamed the ‘Scud’ holds the world record for the fastest serve of
229km/hour. One of Australia’s best known and most talented
international tennis stars, Mark has
enjoyed a successful career on the court with a career high ATP ranking of 8 in 1999. Unfortunately injury has plagued the past few years of Mark’s career with repeated knee injuries in 2001, however his misfortune has only led to strengthening Mark’s resolve to be the best he can be and focus on climbing to the top of the rankings as soon as he is fit and well. Mark turned Professional in 1994 at the age of eighteen. The following year he jumped from a world singles ranking of 307 to number 32, becoming the youngest player to make the year-end Top 50. Since then Mark has climbed the world ranking ladder, making a four week appearance in the Top 20 in 1996 and in the same year, he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open where he upset Number One, Pete Sampras in the third round. In 1996, he won his first title in Toulouse, defeating Magnus Larsson and in the doubles, he advanced to the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, with partner Pat Rafter. 1996 also saw Mark compete in the Atlanta Olympics. In 1998, Mark was a quarter finalist at Wimbledon and finalist at the US Open. Mark also won the 1998 Kooyong Classic defeating Andre Agassi. 1999 was an eventful year for Mark. He took the honours in winning the Hopman Cup, reached the finals in the Colonial Classic, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, was a quarterfinalist at Monte Carlo, had a win in the 1999 ATP Sybase Open in San Jose and a win in the Newsweek Champions Cup in Indian Wells. It was at Wimbledon where Mark was tragically struck down by a knee injury while leading evential champ Peter Sampras in the quarter-finals. Mark’s recent success have included being a finalist at the Paris Indoor 2000 (France), finalist at Hong Kong 2000, winner at San Jose (USA) 2000, winner at Memphis (USA) 2001 and finalist in Adelaide (Australia) 2002.
