MICHAEL BLACK (PIANO) BASED: Sydney, Australia Michael Black has degrees in Education, Performance and Musicology from Sydney Conservatorium and UNSW. He has received numerous awards and grants including the Scarf Award, University of Sydney Staff Research Grant and 2000 Opera Foundation Bayreuth Scholarship. He has performed in Australia and Asia with some Australia’s finest singers including Joan Carden, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Jonathan Summers, Robert Allman and Julian Gavin. Michael performed in the 2006 Perth International Music Festival with Lisa Milne and the Belcea Quartet and the 2005 Wigmore Hall Touring Chamber Music Series in performances of Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Britten’s Canticles. He has performed recitals in the Sydney and Melbourne Festivals and the Brisbane Bienniale Festival and was the coach and accompanist for the inaugural Joan Sutherland Scholarship Competition that was televised nationally from Brisbane. He has broadcast many times for ABC-FM for the Sunday Live, Treasury of Song and the Young Australia series of live broadcasts and recorded a programme of 20th and 21st Century American Songs in late 2004. In 2005, he performed with New Zealand baritone Paul Whelan for the Opera Australia NSW Art Gallery Recital Series. In 2006, he will be recorded a programme of Menotti songs and An die ferne Geliebte for ABC-FM. For a number of years, Michael Black was a lecturer in the Musicology and Vocal Departments at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After a brief stint as a repetiteur, he is now Chorus Master with Opera Australia where he has prepared choruses for more than 75 operas and recordings of Beethoven 9th Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem (ABC Classics) and Love for Three Oranges (Chandos). Michael was the Chorus Master for the Australian Premiere of The Queen Symphony (Sydney Philharmonia and SSO) and the 2004 Andrea Bocelli Australian Tour (Cantillation and SSO). He has also been guest Chorus Master for Opera Holland Park (UK), Sydney Philharmonia and Motet Choirs. Recent engagements include the 2006 performances of The Bells (Cantillation and SSO) conducted by Ashkenazy.
