REG REAGAN

Super sportsman and international celebrity Reg Reagan made his public debut in 1999. Cessnock-born Reg appeared in a short film that year titled "In Search of the Holy Grail" which was produced for the Newcastle Film Festival. Also appearing in the low-budget film were Newcastle Knights stars Andrew Johns, Matthew Gidley and Robbie O'Davis. So impressed was The Footy Show, it sought permission from Reg Reagan's management to air excerpts on the top-rating Nine program.

The following year, Reg Reagan appeared in print for the first time. Following the Newcastle Knights match against the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville, the Sydney Morning Herald published a story headed "No joke, Knights have to hand it to Reg Reagan".

Matthew Johns, speaking on behalf of Reg - who describes himself as a late 1970s Australian who loves going to the beach, hates sunscreen, smokes only Winfield red and drinks full-strength beer - told journalist Steve Mascord: "When I don't feel like coming to training and playing, I just lay in bed and send him (Reagan) along".

Discussing his key role in the Knights 18-10 victory, Reg said: "I thought I played all right. The boys were a bit tense before the game so I said to them 'listen boys, Matty's told me some of the calls but you'll have to help me out a bit'. It settled them down".

These days Reg Reagan is a regular star on the Nine Network's The Footy Show. His debut Sony Music DVD "All of Me" has achieved multi-platinum success and his debut single "Am I Ever Gonna See The Biff Again" which he recorded with The Knucklemen has struck gold. His hilarious book "This Is My Life" (Pan Macmillan) has proven to be another winner for the Matthew Johns character.
